Strengthening Churches Team
Team Leader: Ed Sasnett

Herman Ostry needed his barn moved up the hill to get it out of a flood plain. His son designed a grid of steel tubing attached to the inside and outside of the barn. Mike Ostry, Herman’s son, estimated that 344 people, lifting about 55 pounds/person, could carry the barn to higher ground. As Bruno, Nebraska celebrated its centennial, they included a “barn raising” as a part of the celebration. On July 30, 1988, nearly four hundred thousand people from eleven states were there to witness 344 people easily lift the nine-ton barn and carry it fifty yards up hill in three minutes.

When enough people take hold of a job, it is amazing what can get done. This is the work of the Church Strengthening Team of Union Baptist Association. This team exists to come alongside of pastors and churches to do more than we can do alone. Any member of any church in Union Baptist Association may be a part of the work of this team.

The annual Pastor/Staff Christmas banquet will attract over a hundred pastors, staff members, and spouses to a free meal and entertainment. This is a tangible expression of appreciation for the faithful service of God’s servants.

One of the biggest needs of our churches is training. Every August, Union Baptist Association teams up with Capital Baptist Association to host the C.O.M.E. Conference. Nationally known trainers across a wide variety of church roles instruct several hundred participants in Sunday School, evangelism, and discipleship. The range of classes are a response to the needs expressed by the churches.

Throughout the year individual churches seek financial support for special events hosted by their church. Our team has defrayed costs for marriage retreats, community outreach events, purchased resources like the Beth Moore video studies that are available to all the churches of the Association, and much more. The resources on the Sampson website are available to Union Baptist Churches for training and discipleship because the Church Strengthening Team has purchased for your church and individual members access to a host of professional videos on a wide range of topics.

As you prepare to do the work God has called your church to do, remember there is a resource to help nourish and strengthen your plans. Don’t keep the Church Strengthening Team hidden. Share our testimony with others.
